About us
Background to Group
The MRC Hearing and Communication Group, formed at the University of Manchester
in 2004 and part of the Audiology and Deafness Research Group, is one of
Europe’s foremost centres of excellence in hearing research.
It comprises a diverse and multi-disciplinary body of experts in a number
of fields, currently including audiologists, health visitors, midwives,
specialist nurses, epidemiologists, statisticians, project managers, geneticists,
psychologists, IT specialists, education advisors and administration staff.
As well as carry out world-leading research, the group is actively involved
in putting this into effective clinical practice throughout the NHS. Many

Mission Statement
The MRC Hearing and Communication Group provides a long term home for the
research undertaken by Professor Davis and his team.
It aims to:
- Facilitate and undertake internationally-leading research in hearing
and communication.
- Allow the timely, informed development of evidence-based healthcare
by translating this research into real-world patient services (through
policy development and implementation) that benefits the community at
large and leads to improved quality of life of people of all ages who
have a hearing impairment.
- Work collaboratively with local and national partners, in both the
private and public sectors, to enable wide ranging and high quality research
and robust service development.
- Understand the current and future needs of the hearing impaired and
deaf communities and work to bridge the gap between need and current provision.
Adrian Davis
Professor Adrian Davis is Director of the MRC Hearing & Communication
Group at the University of Manchester, and for many years has been a leading
researcher in the area of hearing impairment. Read
